Full-spectrum extracts like RSO and FECO are chemically complex products, and how they're stored has a real effect on how well they hold up over time. This guide covers the basics of what degrades cannabinoids and terpenes, and how to slow that process down.

What Causes Extracts to Degrade?


Three environmental factors are primarily responsible for breaking down cannabinoids and terpenes over time:

1. Light UV and even regular light exposure can degrade cannabinoids over time, gradually reducing potency and altering the compound profile.

2. Heat High or fluctuating temperatures accelerate the breakdown of both cannabinoids and terpenes. Terpenes in particular are volatile and can evaporate or degrade faster under heat.

3. Air (Oxidation) Exposure to oxygen causes oxidation, which is one of the main ways THC gradually converts into CBN (cannabinol) over time — a process that changes the product's effects and potency.

Best Practices for Storage



  • Keep it dark. Store extracts in opaque or amber containers, away from direct sunlight or bright indoor light.

  • Keep it cool. A cool, stable temperature — avoiding heat sources and temperature swings — helps preserve both cannabinoids and terpenes. Extreme cold (like a freezer) isn't necessary for most extracts and can sometimes make thick extracts harder to handle.

  • Minimize air exposure. Airtight containers reduce oxidation. Try to limit how often a container is opened and resealed.

  • Keep it in its original syringe or container when possible. These are typically designed with the product's texture and stability in mind.


How Long Do Extracts Last?


There's no single universal answer — shelf life depends on the specific extract, how it was made, and how it's stored. As a general pattern, properly stored full-spectrum extracts can often remain usable for many months to a couple of years, but potency and terpene content will gradually decline over time even under good storage conditions. Extracts stored poorly (heat, light, air exposure) will degrade noticeably faster.

Signs an Extract May Have Degraded



  • Noticeable change in color (often darkening further, though RSO and FECO already start dark)

  • Loss of aroma, which suggests terpene loss

  • Texture changes, such as becoming unusually hard, brittle, or separated


A degraded extract isn't necessarily unsafe, but it likely has reduced potency and a different cannabinoid profile than when it was fresh — most notably from THC converting to CBN over time.

Why This Matters for Full-Spectrum Products


Because RSO and FECO are valued specifically for preserving a broad range of the plant's original compounds, proper storage is arguably more important for these products than for more processed extracts like distillate, where a narrower set of compounds is already isolated.
